Galy Gay sets out to buy a fish one morning, obtains an elephant by twilight and is shot that same night. The occurrences that connect these strange events constitute the plot of Man Equals Man, a stunning drama that explores themes of war and the interchangeability of human personality from Germany's eminent modernist theatre-maker. Man Equals Man shows us "a man reassembled like a car." Galy Gay is conned by a troop of army machine-gunners and eventually finds that his identity has been substituted for that of another man. Critic Walter Kerr cited the play as a "curious foreshadowing of the art of brainwashing." Sure to stimulate critical discussions across the disciplines, this don't-miss production marks the University Theatre's first presentation of a Brecht piece in over two decades.
