Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You

by Christopher Durang

First staged off-off Broadway in 1979, Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You is a biting one-act play, which is inherently part lecture, part stand-up, and part vaudeville. In the play, Sister Mary Ignatius is giving a lecture. She points to drawings of the earth, moon, and sun, and then to drawings of heaven, hell, and purgatory. She explains, sometimes with impatience, about the Immaculate Conception and lists what sins send you to hell. Her lecture is interrupted midway by four ex-students of hers, who have come to put on a beloved Christmas pageant, written by Sister’s favorite student who joined a cloistered nunnery. The pageant is clearly the work of an innocent child’s brain, but sounds slightly off with adults presenting it. The play darkens as the true motive of one of the ex-students becomes clear.

The SantaLand Diaries

by David Sedaris

The SantaLand Diaries is a hilarious one-man play about a man’s experiences working as an elf in SantaLand at Macy's department store in New York City. The perfect antidote for holiday havoc, the comedy chronicles everything from his dismay at having to choose an 'elf name' to his questionable co-workers (including profiles of all the Santas and the woman who desperately wanted to wear her costume home everyday), the quality of visitors, and his final relief at the end of the season, Acclaimed satirist and NPR-contributor David Sedaris has put together a brilliant and hilarious piece of work, presenting an uproarious new look at Christmas pageantry and all its victims.
