Comedies were very popular presentations during the early Greek festivals so there is no reason to think Lysistrata was not immensely popular at it's initial production. Athens and Sparta had been at war for 20 years and the play offered one of the few opportunities to laugh at war. Lysistrata, whos name means releaser of war, is the woman with the plan, but she has trouble convincing the lusty women of Greece to give up sex. When she finally persuades them to join her cause, innuendos abound as a battle of the sexes ensues. This dance-infused production places the conflict in present day global relations. Who are our enemies? What is our war? The audience must now decide how far-fetched Aristophanes fantasy really is and if we can really achieve peace.
