The Royal Family
by George S. Kauffman and Edna Ferber

Written and premiered in 1927, this joyous celebration of the American theatre is one of six collaborations between Kaufman and Ferber--two of the greatest names in American literature. Intended as a fond spoof of the then-reigning stage family in America--the Barrymores--The Royal Family tells an alternating tender and hilarious story of the old and celebrated "First Family of the Theatre," whose love for the theatre is so great it cannot possibly get the greasepaint out of its blood.

A sharp and biting play about people whose off-stage histrionics frequently rival their on-stage performances, The Royal Family is the engaging and uproariously funny saga of the talented and often eccentric Cavendish clan during the spirited 1920's. This is a play that celebrates life as well as the theatre. The momentum is mercurial as the Cavendish clan sword fights, swoons, and frantically acts their way through their daily lives proving the old theatre axiom--"the show must go on." Fast paced and enormously entertaining, the play masterfully depicts conflict between the roles played
in life and those played out on the stage.
