This operatic version of the classic German fairy tale, made popular by the Brothers Grimm, premiered at Weimar on December 23, 1893. In partnership with the KU School of Music, KU Theatre brings the story of two hungry children to the Crafton-Preyer Theatre Stage. The story comes from medieval German folklore and deals with themes of poverty, starvation, abandonment, and violence. In the original tale, a poor woodsman and his wife make the difficult decision to leave their children in the woods rather than watch them starve to death at home. Though the story has lightened in tone through the years, there are still heavy themes to be discussed and explored.
