The Glass Menagerie

by Tennessee Williams

  • Directed by Jack Wright
  • Scenic & Costume Design by Biz Grim
  • Lighting Design by Dennis Christilles

Originally written as a screenplay for MGM, this poignant family drama stemmed from one of Tennessee Williams’ short stories. The first highly successful play from one of America’s most highly regarded playwrights, The Glass Menagerie is a memory play, told by Tom about his mother, Amanda, and his sister, Laura. First produced in Chicago in 1945, the play shows us a family unable to accept reality. Each member of the Wingfield family has withdrawn into a private world of illusion trying to find the comfort and meaning the real world does not seem to offer. Laura's collection of glass animal figurines are like Laura herself—delicate, fanciful, and somehow old-fashioned— and represents the colorful and enticing world of fragile illusions in which Laura immerses herself.
