The University Theatre puts the curse of ?the Scottish play? to the test with its production of this Shakespearean tale of madness and unrestrained ambition. Macbeth is the Bard?s shortest and most violent tragedy.

Three witches prophesize that the Scottish general Macbeth will become the King of Scotland. Spurred to action by his wife, Lady Macbeth, Macbeth goes to murderous lengths to secure his destiny and become king. Plagued by guilt and paranoia, Macbeth soon grows into a true tyrant, killing all potential threats to his reign, including the wife and child of the Scottish duke Macduff. Meanwhile, Lady Macbeth too succumbs to the guilt and quickly descends into madness. To his surprise, the prophecies become Macbeth?s undoing as his enemies advance on the castle. Macduff ultimately exacts revenge and kills the ruthless tyrant.

Award-winning New York director Tazewell Thompson puts a timeless spin on this classic of the English Renaissance.

A special matinee for Kansas high school students will be held October 12.
