One of Shaw's first commercial successes when it was first produced in London in 1894, this lighthearted comedy is a satire on the foolishness of glorifying something so terrible as war. Set during the four-month-long Serbo-Bulgarian War, the endearing play is also a satire on the foolishness of basing affections on idealistic notions of love. The play focuses on the heroine who is engaged to a war hero who is away fighting. Her world is turned upside down when a man bursts into her house in terror and begs her to hide him so he will not be killed. When the war ends and her hero returns, to her, he acts less than honorably, and Raina's romantic ideals begin to wear thin when she comes to think of her fiance as disagreeable and irritating. When the wounded soldier also returns, the comedy threatens to turn into tragedy, and the drama builds as the love triangle begins to unravel.
