The longest running musical of the 1930’s, this 1934 hit is the perfect song and dance vehicle to showcase the sophisticated and clever music and lyrics of Cole Porter. A lively, romantic story, it is set on a luxurious ocean liner heading for England. On board are Reno Sweeney, evangelist turned bar hostess, who has fallen for and followed Billy Crocker to persuade him that it is she he wants to marry, not Hope Harcourt. Hope, however, wants to marry Sir Evelyn Oakleigh, not Billy, who has boarded the ship without a ticket and is forced to take on a variety of disguises. All this occurs while Rev. Dr. Moon, whom the FBI has named “Public Enemy 13”, is also on board, aspiring to be Enemy #1. When the ship reaches England, Hope discovers she has become an heiress, so she drops Sir Evelyn and agrees to marry Billy. At the same time, Oakleigh discovers Reno and Reverend Moon discovers he is no longer even on the FBI list. Porter’s score, called one of the most glorious in the history of American Musical Theatre, features such classics as All Through the Night, It's DeLovely, Blow, Gabriel, Blow, I Get a Kick Out of You, and You're the Top, many accentuated by a stage full of tap-dancers. This slapstick game of love gone awry takes the audience on a magical musical journey full of laughs.
