Lanford Wilson’s 1998 drama is a watercolor portrait of a small Southern town where a fatal accident uncovers some strange happenings—murder, adultery and dirty business dealings to name just a few. Described by critics as a “socio-political mystery,” the play's mood shifts from light to increasing darkness as currents of divisive attitudes wait for a storm to erupt. With characters, who are remarkable both for their comic turns and for their enormous depth, Book of Days is an understated, but creative, cross between Our Town and a TV serial where everybody knows everybody's business, and the most surprising people are up to no good.
