Meet the Director
For Paul Hough An Army of One continues his 42-year involvement with theatre at the University of Kansas. Paul
received the Kilty Cane in 1967, the year he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. While an undergraduate, he played the role of Kenyon Clutter in Columbia Film’s production of Truman
Capote’s In Cold Blood.
As an actor, some of Paul’s favorite roles have been in the University Theatre productions of The Tempest (1963),
Beauty and the Beast (1963), My Fair Lady (1965), Oliver (1966), Cabaret (1972), and Moonchildren (1973). Paul played twins Miles and Mark in Paul Stephen Lim’s ACTF-winning original script, Conpersonas, staged during the 1975-76 season in the Inge Theatre, at the ACTF regional competition in Emporia, and
at the national festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. For the University Theatre, Paul directed Oklahoma! in 1975 and Pirates of Penzance in 1991. For the English Alternative Theatre, Paul acted in Bent (1994) and The Normal Heart (1991), and has directed the premier productions of The Sea and The Devil’s
Game by student playwrights Will Averill and Bo Price in 1995-96 and Lim’s Report to the River in 1997-98. He also directed the premier production of Lim’s Homerica for KU’s Student Union Activities in 1977, and Mother Tongue for the East/West
Players in Los Angeles in 1988.
Paul’s productions in Chicago have garnered 12 Joseph Jefferson Citations, including eight for Summer Stock Murder, featuring KU alumnus James Still. He received the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards as director and producer for From Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weil, performed with KU alumnus Bill Bowersock in the baritone role.
As Director of Production for the American Heartland Theatre in Kansas City, MO, Paul currently functions as artistic director and producer. There he has
produced more than 90 productions, including the premiers of
The Clouds of Highway 40, penned by alums Bowersock and Still, and Searching for Eden: The Diaries of Adam and Eve and Looking Over the President’s Shoulder by Still. Paul has directed more than 30 productions at the American Heartland, including Plaza Suite, Lend Me A Tenor, I Hate Hamlet, Beehive, Something’s Afoot, The Prisoner of Second Avenue, Song of Singapore, Sugar Babies, Henceforward, The Last of the
Red Hot Lovers, Always...Patsy Cline, A Grand Night For
Singing, Buddy...The Buddy Holly Story, California Suite, A Wonderful Life, Dial “M” For Murder, Funny Money, The Woman
